Brief History and Development
The Department of Accounting was established following the upgrade of the defunct College of Education, Agbor to a full-fledged university on 25th February 2021, an advancement made possible through a bill proposed by the Visitor to the University. Upon this transition, the National Universities Commission (NUC) granted approval for the commencement of the Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) Accounting and B.Sc. Banking and Finance programss, administered under two separate departments. This development marked the formal introduction of degree-level accounting education at the University of Delta, Agbor.

Since inception, the Department has progressively expanded its academic and administrative structures to align with national expectations and global trends in accounting training. In response to emerging professional and research demands, postgraduate programmes were subsequently introduced to strengthen the Department’s capacity for advanced scholarship. These postgraduate pathways provide opportunities for research-oriented and practice-driven engagement, equipping graduates for leadership roles across academia, governance, industry, and entrepreneurship. Emphasis is placed on contemporary themes such as forensic accounting, sustainability reporting, public sector accountability, financial technology, and data-driven decision-making, reflecting the Department’s commitment to relevance and innovation.
